Dream Vignettes by Fifi Leigh at www.lulu.com

Friday, 4.5.19
I finally self-published my graphic novel on www.lulu.com, which is the same site that I self-published my first novel, The Sand Dollar. This graphic novel, Dream Vignettes, is a prequel to The Sand Dollar. The graphic is about the main character's one-year journey from college graduation. She experience a wild adventure, meeting all kinds of people as well as learning new information. She experiences lead her to dream travel for insights, inspiration, and information.

I decided to draw the graphic novel manually, mostly using pencils and colored pencils, as well as black ink pens and colored markers. It looks like a 203-page mixed media fine arts project. I decided to draw it manually because I want to be unique and stand out with my own artwork. I am not a computer, nor do I want to be one, and my drawing displays my personal style as an artist. People have told me that my drawing style is realistic. I am self-taught artist, who loved to draw as a hobby. As a kid, I often watched cartoons because I wanted to study the artwork. My dream was to draw a comic book someday. After getting my BA in Social Science and MBA, I decided to pursue a graphic design certificate, which helped me draw a graphic novel.

I did the whole graphic novel on my own, which includes artboards, rough sketches, better sketches, coloring it, inking it, writing the script, and drawing the covers on Adobe Illustrator. This whole process also involved a lot of research and taking notes. I even read two or three books about screenwriting, which helped me work on my graphic novel script. Since this is my first graphic novel, I made a lot of mistakes, which lead me to start over many times. I think I drew three drafts, each around 200 pages, which is a lot of work, and then deciding I wasn't happy with something about it. But I finally figured things out and everything worked out.

After self-publishing my graphic novel, I bought a copy of the book for marketing purposes. And, then, I decided to putting together all my drafts and sketches into a large manila envelope and mail it to myself in order to create the "poor man's copyright." The next day, I received my copyright package in my mailbox, and I placed it with my first novel's copyright package, which is still also sealed.

Now, I need to work on marketing material, such as promotional postcards and business cards. I might even do a video.
